The swelling number of street children in Pakistan's urban centers is a result of society's failure to guarantee them their rights and meet their basic needs. Once shunned by the society, these children lose faith in community as a whole, making them feel unwanted and misfit, thus, not wanting to make an effort to integrate back into society, or wanting to maintain ties with their families. Through "Every Child Counts", Bridges hopes to inculcate positive self-esteem and confidence in these children. The Consortium intends to raise public awareness, generate empathy, and interest in the issues surrounding Lahore's street children.
The proposed survey will be one of the first attempts to carry out a thorough analysis of the problem of street children in Lahore. The research will provide a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the experiences of street children; will examine the social and economic issues behind the problem; evaluate the types and forms of work children perform on the streets; and focus on the hazards to children's health and to their physical, moral and intellectual development. Bridges intends to distribute hundreds of care packages to these children which would include wind blockers (jackets), slippers, socks, and basic health and hygiene pouches.
